Solent Air Watch is a people-powered project – we want to connect different communities across Southampton and develop solutions for a healthier and more liveable city. We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help us gather data, raise awareness and gain support for clean air initiatives.
We have 4 key roles:
- Citizen scientists: Would you like to host a ‘Sniffy’ sensor and help us understand local sources of air pollution?
- Champions: Are you keen to raise awareness of air pollution within your community?
- Makers: Would you like to learn how to build a ‘Sniffy’ sensor or help develop it further?
- Mentors: Would you like to share your skills and knowledge with the project and other volunteers?
Or are you a marketing and social media guru? Do you have a flair for graphic design or making short videos? Perhaps you’re great at running events or schools outreach? Or you love to analyse data?
What would I gain by helping?
By volunteering with us you’ll be helping a great cause to clean up the air in Southampton, promote sustainable development and have the chance to meet new and interesting people! You’ll receive an introduction to how we’re going to tackle air pollution using citizen science and the community engagement sides of the Solent Air Watch project – so don’t worry if you’re new to the idea! Enthusiasm and the desire to do something new and positive is all you need.
What is Solent Air Watch?
Solent Air Watch is a citizen science project which will measure and map levels of pollution in Southampton. We will run workshops to build air pollution monitors (called ‘Sniffy’) as well as community events to talk about local pollution issues and develop neighbourhood action plans. By working closely with local communities we can find out the best way to tackle air pollution in different areas across the city.
If you’d like to find out more, please fill out our short contact form and we’ll be in touch!
